Why I chose vegetarianism

On Valentine’s Day 2018, most people were out eating a romantic steak dinner for two, dipping marshmallows in a chocolate fountain or munching on heart-shaped gummies in the cinema – but not me…

This was the day I changed up my lifestyle and cut out meat.

But why?

Nowadays I hear that vegetarianism or veganism is merely a trend that millennials are getting sucked into because they want to feel ‘hip’; and I also have a few farmer friends claiming that I’m ‘ruining’ their business because of my drastic choice. On the daily I am bombarded with “what’s the point, you’re not going to save the animals alone, are you?” Well, of course I’m not!

I don’t have a long-winded story about why I made this choice: not because of health benefits, not because I think I can save the animals and not because I am attempting to stop global warming (these are all positive bonuses though!) The core reason is simply because I hate the thought of eating dead animals. That’s it. Simple.

I think being vegetarian is a positive thing and I don’t regret my decision. I don’t ‘miss’ meat or get that mouth-watering sensation when you just crave something, contrary to popular belief as my friends try to rub their McDonald’s quarter pounder under my nose (no thank you, get it away!)

Another thing is that despite my decision to become a vegetarian, at the end of the day it was my decision and no one else’s, so I wouldn’t try to force it onto anyone, even though if anyone was pondering it, I would encourage them to do it 100% as long as they were sure that they would be able to get all of the nutrients they need.

I am completely content in the lifestyle in which I am currently living and have no plans to revert or change. I just ask that if you speak to anyone living a different way to you, it’s ok to disagree with what they think, but there is no need to give them stick about any of it because at the end of the day it’s not affecting your life, is it?

I would love to do more posts about vegetarianism such as what I eat, how I get nutrients and positives and negatives etc, is that something you lovely readers would like to read? Let me know!

  1. I love this! I started my vegetarian journey in January 2017, and was “officially” meat free by the summer of that year and I haven’t looked back since! I guess technically I am pescetarian, and my family eat fish so I will eat it every now and then, but I just feel like I don’t eat it enough to call myself pescetarian… if that makes sense!

  2. I love your reason behind not eating meat any longer. You don’t need to go full vegan to make a difference. Mine is the same but over time I’ve noticed not eating meat and dairy has done wonders for my health so I avoid eating it completely now so I can stay glowing and a health face 🙂 xx

  3. I’m not vegan or vegetarian but this post really intrigued me! I’m interested to know as to why people are not into eating meat and this opened up my eyes. I look forward to more posts relating to vegetarianism so I can learn more!

    1. I’m glad that you enjoyed reading, I’m definitely planning more posts because I think it’s important to educate people about this kind of thing as I know for a lot of people they just don’t understand why people do
      this!

  5. Love this! This was my experience as well. I became vegetarian like 8 or 9 years ago and it was mainly because I just didn’t like meat and didn’t want to eat it. All the other benefits were just bonuses! And I completely agree that if we expect others to be kind and not give us grief about not eating meat, then we must act the same in return and not push vegetarianism on people who don’t want to hear it. Nice post! 🙂

    1. So true! I did it as a personal thing, like so many vegetarians do but for some reason everyone thinks that I want to push my lifestyle on them when in reality I’m just trying to mind my own business and eat my quorn nuggets in peace! You’ve actually inspired my to write a post about myths about being vegetarian haha I’ll have to do that soon. Thank you so much for reading!

  6. I am not 100% vegetarian and do have meat-based meals, but my meat consumption has gone down significantly in the past 2 years. Growing up in a vegetarian household, I was never kept away from embracing vegetables and maybe that is one reason why I still prefer vegetarian food on most days
